What to Expect During Tooth Extraction

Before Your Extraction

Dr. Deljavan will thoroughly evaluate your tooth and discuss all options, including alternatives to extraction when possible. If extraction is the best choice, we’ll explain the procedure and discuss tooth replacement options to prevent future complications.

During Your Extraction

We begin by numbing your tooth, jawbone, and surrounding gums with local anesthetic. You’ll feel pressure during the procedure as we carefully loosen the tooth, but the anesthetic prevents pain. Some teeth require sectioning—dividing the tooth into sections for safer, more comfortable removal.

After Your Extraction

We provide detailed post-operative instructions and remain available throughout your recovery. Most patients experience minimal discomfort managed easily with prescribed medication. We’ll schedule follow-up appointments to monitor healing and discuss tooth replacement options.

Understanding Tooth Extractions

While our primary goal is always to save your natural teeth, sometimes extraction is the healthiest choice for your overall oral health and well-being.
Common reasons for tooth extraction include severe decay that cannot be restored with a filling or crown, advanced gum disease that has destroyed the bone and tissue supporting your teeth, teeth broken below the gum line or fractured beyond repair, crowding that requires space for orthodontic treatment, impacted teeth that cannot erupt properly, and infection risk for patients with compromised immune systems or undergoing certain medical treatments. In each case, extraction prevents pain, infection, and damage to surrounding teeth and bone.

Protecting Your Smile After Extraction

Removing a tooth can lead to serious complications if not properly addressed. Adjacent teeth may shift into the empty space, opposing teeth can over-erupt, and bone loss can occur at the extraction site. These changes affect your chewing ability, jaw joint function, and overall dental health.
Dr. Deljavan will discuss tooth replacement options with you, including dental implants for permanent replacement, bridges to fill the gap and restore function, and other restorative solutions customized to your needs. By planning ahead for tooth replacement, we help you avoid complications and maintain optimal oral health.

Will my tooth extraction be painful?

We use effective local anesthesia to numb the area completely before your extraction. You’ll feel pressure during the procedure, but not pain. Most patients report that extractions are far more comfortable than they expected.
Most patients heal within a few days to a week. You may experience some swelling and mild discomfort for the first few days, which is easily managed with prescribed medication and cold compresses.
Stick to soft, cool foods for the first few days, such as yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs. Avoid hot liquids, crunchy foods, and don’t use straws. Gradually return to your normal diet as healing progresses.
In most cases, yes. Replacing extracted teeth prevents serious complications including shifting teeth, bone loss, bite problems, and jaw joint issues. Dr. Deljavan will discuss your replacement options during your consultation.

Patient Stories

I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Deljavan and the staff here. Everyone was very kind, informative and helpful. I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted after many years of putting it off out of fear. My bottom left tooth was impacted and extremely close to the nerve but my recovery has been smooth and painless. The swelling was very minimal. My friends and family couldn’t believe how quick I bounced back I would highly recommend this place to anyone. These guys know what they’re doing!

Just had my tooth extracted and met the Dr and the staff for the first time. Extremely nice staff, the dental assistant was very nice and fully explained what to expect. The Dr was very polite and knows his stuff, he goes into detail and answered all my questions. The procedure went great with no issues. Highly recommend this office and Dr! I go back in 4 months for my implant. Great experience!

This place is truly there to help people. For anyone truly terrified of the dentist, trust these people! The doctor and staff are amazing. I called them in tears because of my fear/anxieties. I told them something was going on (who knew it was actually quite serious) and they got me in that day, no questions. I’m sure I showed up looking a mess, because fear, but they were kind, gentle but very much putting the wheels on to get the situation going. The surgery went smoothly and I appreciate them daily. In the 10+ years I’ve dealt with broken teeth, I never thought I’d be brave enough to get it taken care of. So thank you again! They are very thoughtful but thorough. I will be going back for the wisdom teeth. Do recommend!
– Beth L.
The doctor and his staff did a great job performing my procedure. It went very smooth. They provided me with printouts for before and after care. I just left the clinic. I was very comfortable before and after the surgery. The clinic is clean and the doctor is highly professional. The staff were communicative and professional.
– R. S.
I got my wisdom teeth removed here and honestly, I’m so glad I found them! I’m incredibly nervous about dentistry in general, but they made me feel incredibly comfortable with the process and I felt confident in their abilities after discussing it with them. They got me in the same week of my consultation even! I greatly appreciated the staff members making jokes with me throughout the process as well. TLDR: incredibly competent, kind, and efficient. Highly recommend them to anyone, especially if you’re a nervous nelly like me!
– Shawna R.
Everyone here was professional and friendly. They will answer your questions. My oral surgery, removal of wisdom teeth, was done very, very quickly, 30 minutes. I opted to be awake for it because I have no fear of such things, and am rather curious about what goes on. They were very efficient and knew exactly what they were doing. I was told several times what to expect, how to prepare, and what I would need to do to recover. Written instructions were also sent home which I found very helpful because my memory is more like a sieve than a bowl. Anyhow, if you are needing oral surgery done, this is a good place to go.
