Understanding Impacted Teeth

An impacted tooth cannot erupt properly because it’s blocked or “stuck” beneath the gum line. Left untreated, impacted teeth can damage neighboring teeth, cause infections, lead to cysts, or affect your bite alignment. The type of treatment depends on which tooth is impacted and its functional importance.
Wisdom teeth are the most commonly impacted and are typically removed since they serve no functional purpose and often cause complications. Early removal in the late teens or early twenties prevents problems and allows for easier recovery. Upper canines are the second most frequently impacted and are usually preserved through surgical exposure combined with orthodontic guidance, as they have the longest roots and play a critical role in your bite.

Treatment Options for Impacted Teeth

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Most impacted wisdom teeth are removed to prevent crowding, infection, and damage to adjacent teeth. This procedure is typically performed under sedation, with most patients recovering within a few days.

Surgical Exposure for Canines and Other Teeth

When preserving a tooth is beneficial, surgical exposure allows it to erupt with orthodontic guidance. Dr. Deljavan exposes the tooth and places an orthodontic bracket on it, which is connected to your orthodontic appliance. Your orthodontist then gradually guides the tooth into position over several months.

What to Expect During Treatment

Comprehensive Evaluation

We begin with a thorough examination, including panoramic X-rays and 3D imaging. Dr. Deljavan will assess the position of your impacted tooth, evaluate your bone structure, and work with your orthodontist to create a coordinated treatment plan.

Pre-Surgical Preparation

For surgical exposure procedures, your orthodontist will typically create adequate space in your dental arch before surgery. In some cases, over-retained baby teeth or other obstacles may need to be removed first.

The Surgical Procedure

You’ll rest under our supervision until you’re ready to go home. Most patients feel drowsy and prefer to rest for the remainder of the day. We’ll provide prescription pain medication, detailed aftercare instructions, and schedule a follow-up appointment.

Recovery and Follow-Up

Recovery is typically straightforward, with most patients returning to normal activities within a few days. For exposure procedures, your orthodontist will begin guiding the tooth into position during your regular orthodontic appointments. For extractions, we’ll see you for a follow-up visit to ensure proper healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if an impacted tooth is left untreated?

Impacted teeth can lead to complications over time, including damage to neighboring teeth, infections, cyst development, or bite alignment issues. Early treatment is straightforward and prevents these concerns from developing.
Most oral surgeons recommend removing impacted wisdom teeth before problems develop, typically in the late teens or early twenties when recovery is easiest. Dr. Deljavan will evaluate your specific situation during your consultation.
Most patients feel significantly better within 3-5 days and can resume normal activities. Complete healing takes several weeks, but you won’t need to limit activities during this time. We provide detailed instructions to ensure the smoothest possible recovery.
The surgery itself usually takes less than an hour, while the orthodontic guidance phase typically takes several months to a year. Your orthodontist will provide a more specific timeline based on your situation.
Canine teeth have the longest roots of any human teeth and play a critical role in guiding your bite and keeping other teeth properly aligned. Preserving them through surgical exposure is almost always preferable to extraction and replacement when possible.

Patient Stories

I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Deljavan and the staff here. Everyone was very kind, informative and helpful. I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted after many years of putting it off out of fear. My bottom left tooth was impacted and extremely close to the nerve but my recovery has been smooth and painless. The swelling was very minimal. My friends and family couldn’t believe how quick I bounced back I would highly recommend this place to anyone. These guys know what they’re doing!

Just had my tooth extracted and met the Dr and the staff for the first time. Extremely nice staff, the dental assistant was very nice and fully explained what to expect. The Dr was very polite and knows his stuff, he goes into detail and answered all my questions. The procedure went great with no issues. Highly recommend this office and Dr! I go back in 4 months for my implant. Great experience!

This place is truly there to help people. For anyone truly terrified of the dentist, trust these people! The doctor and staff are amazing. I called them in tears because of my fear/anxieties. I told them something was going on (who knew it was actually quite serious) and they got me in that day, no questions. I’m sure I showed up looking a mess, because fear, but they were kind, gentle but very much putting the wheels on to get the situation going. The surgery went smoothly and I appreciate them daily. In the 10+ years I’ve dealt with broken teeth, I never thought I’d be brave enough to get it taken care of. So thank you again! They are very thoughtful but thorough. I will be going back for the wisdom teeth. Do recommend!
– Beth L.
The doctor and his staff did a great job performing my procedure. It went very smooth. They provided me with printouts for before and after care. I just left the clinic. I was very comfortable before and after the surgery. The clinic is clean and the doctor is highly professional. The staff were communicative and professional.
– R. S.
I got my wisdom teeth removed here and honestly, I’m so glad I found them! I’m incredibly nervous about dentistry in general, but they made me feel incredibly comfortable with the process and I felt confident in their abilities after discussing it with them. They got me in the same week of my consultation even! I greatly appreciated the staff members making jokes with me throughout the process as well. TLDR: incredibly competent, kind, and efficient. Highly recommend them to anyone, especially if you’re a nervous nelly like me!
– Shawna R.
Everyone here was professional and friendly. They will answer your questions. My oral surgery, removal of wisdom teeth, was done very, very quickly, 30 minutes. I opted to be awake for it because I have no fear of such things, and am rather curious about what goes on. They were very efficient and knew exactly what they were doing. I was told several times what to expect, how to prepare, and what I would need to do to recover. Written instructions were also sent home which I found very helpful because my memory is more like a sieve than a bowl. Anyhow, if you are needing oral surgery done, this is a good place to go.
