Benefits of Early Oral Pathology Screening

Early evaluation of oral abnormalities offers protection and peace of mind that impacts far more than your smile. Quick, accurate diagnosis helps ensure that any concerns are addressed promptly and effectively.

Understanding Oral Pathology

Oral pathology involves diagnosing and treating diseases of the mouth, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, salivary glands, and surrounding tissues. While many conditions are harmless or easily treatable, some conditions such as precancerous lesions or oral cancer require prompt attention.
The mouth is normally lined with smooth, coral pink mucosa. Any deviation from this healthy appearance may signal an underlying issue. Identifying these changes early is essential for your long-term oral and overall health.

Signs You Should Never Ignore

While not all abnormalities indicate cancer, schedule an evaluation if you notice:
Pain is not always present, even in cases of oral cancer, so any persistent change in your mouth, lips, face, or neck should be evaluated promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if a spot in my mouth is serious?

Any sore, lump, discoloration, or area that does not heal within two weeks should be evaluated. While many lesions are benign, early assessment is essential for ruling out precancerous or cancerous conditions.
Most biopsies are quick and comfortable. The area is numbed thoroughly, and patients usually describe minimal discomfort afterward. Mild soreness is normal and typically resolves within a day or two.
Not necessarily. Many red or white areas are benign irritations, but some can indicate dysplasia or early cancer. A professional evaluation and, when needed, a biopsy provide clarity.
If cancer is detected, Dr. Deljavan will discuss the findings in detail and outline the most effective treatment options. We work closely with medical teams and cancer specialists to ensure seamless, coordinated care.
We recommend at least one professional screening per year, and individuals with risk factors such as tobacco use, high alcohol consumption, or a history of previous lesions may need screenings more frequently.

Patient Stories

I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Deljavan and the staff here. Everyone was very kind, informative and helpful. I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted after many years of putting it off out of fear. My bottom left tooth was impacted and extremely close to the nerve but my recovery has been smooth and painless. The swelling was very minimal. My friends and family couldn’t believe how quick I bounced back I would highly recommend this place to anyone. These guys know what they’re doing!

Just had my tooth extracted and met the Dr and the staff for the first time. Extremely nice staff, the dental assistant was very nice and fully explained what to expect. The Dr was very polite and knows his stuff, he goes into detail and answered all my questions. The procedure went great with no issues. Highly recommend this office and Dr! I go back in 4 months for my implant. Great experience!
– Dan F.
This place is truly there to help people. For anyone truly terrified of the dentist, trust these people! The doctor and staff are amazing. I called them in tears because of my fear/anxieties. I told them something was going on (who knew it was actually quite serious) and they got me in that day, no questions. I’m sure I showed up looking a mess, because fear, but they were kind, gentle but very much putting the wheels on to get the situation going. The surgery went smoothly and I appreciate them daily. In the 10+ years I’ve dealt with broken teeth, I never thought I’d be brave enough to get it taken care of. So thank you again! They are very thoughtful but thorough. I will be going back for the wisdom teeth. Do recommend!
– Beth L.
The doctor and his staff did a great job performing my procedure. It went very smooth. They provided me with printouts for before and after care. I just left the clinic. I was very comfortable before and after the surgery. The clinic is clean and the doctor is highly professional. The staff were communicative and professional.
– R. S.
I got my wisdom teeth removed here and honestly, I’m so glad I found them! I’m incredibly nervous about dentistry in general, but they made me feel incredibly comfortable with the process and I felt confident in their abilities after discussing it with them. They got me in the same week of my consultation even! I greatly appreciated the staff members making jokes with me throughout the process as well. TLDR: incredibly competent, kind, and efficient. Highly recommend them to anyone, especially if you’re a nervous nelly like me!
– Shawna R.
Everyone here was professional and friendly. They will answer your questions. My oral surgery, removal of wisdom teeth, was done very, very quickly, 30 minutes. I opted to be awake for it because I have no fear of such things, and am rather curious about what goes on. They were very efficient and knew exactly what they were doing. I was told several times what to expect, how to prepare, and what I would need to do to recover. Written instructions were also sent home which I found very helpful because my memory is more like a sieve than a bowl. Anyhow, if you are needing oral surgery done, this is a good place to go.
