Restore Function, Comfort, and Confidence with Corrective Jaw Surgery

When your jaws don’t align properly, it affects far more than your appearance. Jaw misalignment can cause chronic pain, difficulty chewing, speech problems, breathing issues, and long-term damage to your teeth and joints. At Oral & Facial Surgery Associates, we specialize in orthognathic surgery—a proven surgical solution that repositions misaligned jaws to restore proper function and create facial harmony.

Dr. Deljavan works closely with your orthodontist to plan and execute comprehensive treatment that transforms both function and appearance. If you’ve struggled with bite problems, jaw pain, or facial imbalance, corrective jaw surgery may be the solution you’ve been looking for. Call us today at 817-283-5581 to schedule your consultation.

Understanding Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery, also called corrective jaw surgery, repositions misaligned jaws to improve function and appearance. While orthodontics straightens teeth within the jaw, orthognathic surgery moves the jaw bones themselves into proper alignment. Surgery becomes necessary when the problem involves jaw position rather than just tooth alignment—situations orthodontics alone cannot correct.
Jaw misalignment can result from different growth rates between upper and lower jaws, birth defects, facial trauma, hereditary conditions, or environmental factors during development. You may benefit from corrective jaw surgery if you experience difficulty chewing, chronic jaw pain or TMJ disorders, speech difficulties, breathing problems, excessive tooth wear, open bite, protruding jaw, receding chin, facial asymmetry, or inability to close your lips comfortably.

What to Expect During Your Jaw Surgery

Initial Consultation

Your journey begins with a comprehensive evaluation including detailed X-rays and 3D imaging. We’ll examine your bite, jaw alignment, and facial structure, then discuss whether you’re a candidate for surgery and what results you can expect.

Pre-Surgical Orthodontics

Most patients wear braces for several months before surgery to align teeth within each jaw. This preparation phase is crucial for achieving the best final result.

The Surgery

Corrective jaw surgery is performed in the hospital and typically takes four to six hours. The procedure involves repositioning one or both jaws to achieve proper alignment. Most patients stay in the hospital for one day following surgery.

Recovery Timeline

Most significant healing occurs within the first two weeks. Gradual return to normal chewing on soft foods takes about two months. Braces remain in place for six to twelve months during final adjustments, and full function is typically achieved within one year.

Post-Surgical Care

We provide comprehensive post-operative instructions and remain closely involved throughout your recovery. Regular follow-up appointments ensure proper healing and optimal results.

Patient Stories

I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Deljavan and the staff here. Everyone was very kind, informative and helpful. I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted after many years of putting it off out of fear. My bottom left tooth was impacted and extremely close to the nerve but my recovery has been smooth and painless. The swelling was very minimal. My friends and family couldn’t believe how quick I bounced back I would highly recommend this place to anyone. These guys know what they’re doing!
–  Ally H.
Just had my tooth extracted and met the Dr and the staff for the first time. Extremely nice staff, the dental assistant was very nice and fully explained what to expect. The Dr was very polite and knows his stuff, he goes into detail and answered all my questions. The procedure went great with no issues. Highly recommend this office and Dr! I go back in 4 months for my implant. Great experience!
– Dan F.
This place is truly there to help people. For anyone truly terrified of the dentist, trust these people! The doctor and staff are amazing. I called them in tears because of my fear/anxieties. I told them something was going on (who knew it was actually quite serious) and they got me in that day, no questions. I’m sure I showed up looking a mess, because fear, but they were kind, gentle but very much putting the wheels on to get the situation going. The surgery went smoothly and I appreciate them daily. In the 10+ years I’ve dealt with broken teeth, I never thought I’d be brave enough to get it taken care of. So thank you again! They are very thoughtful but thorough. I will be going back for the wisdom teeth. Do recommend!
– Beth L.
The doctor and his staff did a great job performing my procedure. It went very smooth. They provided me with printouts for before and after care. I just left the clinic. I was very comfortable before and after the surgery. The clinic is clean and the doctor is highly professional. The staff were communicative and professional.
– R. S.
I got my wisdom teeth removed here and honestly, I’m so glad I found them! I’m incredibly nervous about dentistry in general, but they made me feel incredibly comfortable with the process and I felt confident in their abilities after discussing it with them. They got me in the same week of my consultation even! I greatly appreciated the staff members making jokes with me throughout the process as well. TLDR: incredibly competent, kind, and efficient. Highly recommend them to anyone, especially if you’re a nervous nelly like me!
– Shawna R.
Everyone here was professional and friendly. They will answer your questions. My oral surgery, removal of wisdom teeth, was done very, very quickly, 30 minutes. I opted to be awake for it because I have no fear of such things, and am rather curious about what goes on. They were very efficient and knew exactly what they were doing. I was told several times what to expect, how to prepare, and what I would need to do to recover. Written instructions were also sent home which I found very helpful because my memory is more like a sieve than a bowl. Anyhow, if you are needing oral surgery done, this is a good place to go.
